I have been really on and off with my Prozac medication, and now I have been feeling REALLY weird? I have a million time more anxiety, but if I go to the Doctor he will just make me start taking every day again, which I don't want to do. If I stop taking it long enough will the effects eventually stop happening?
moosefiles replied: "Yes, but it will take a week or 2. One thing to consider is why you went on it in the first place. I went off mine because I thought I felt better and no longer needed it. I was wrong. It was the meds that made me feel better. I went back on again."
flash replied: "If you are prescribed Prozac, you should take it according to the Dr.s orders. If it is causing a problem, talk to your doctor and tell them how it is making you feel. Maybe they can prescribe another medication that won't make you feel weird. Maybe it's just because you go off and on of your medication that is causing the problems. I've had depression too, and they tried a lot of drugs that caused bad side effects. By talking with my Doc we finally found one that worked for me. Be honest with the Doc and hopefully you can find a medication that works for you too. Good luck"
skunk pie replied: "I'm confused. Taking your medication erratically, is going to cause problems. You are taking a drug and that drug will alter your state of mind. Either take it as directed or don't take it at all.
I did take generic Prozac for about 6 months. I was on 40 mg and it made me feel more depressed, much more panicky, unable to sleep and way more impulsive and although depressed, more euphoric than ever. I ended up attempting suicide. When I complained, my psychiatrist would simply up my dosage and tell me to see a psychologist, which would tell me to go to my psychiatrist about my complaints. Ha! Lots of fun. Anyways, the point is that I quit that medication 'cold turkey' and the symptoms that I had before going on Prozac obviously stayed, but those that were added with the Prozac went away. I had no discontinuation syndrome.
The real danger with quitting SSRI's 'cold turkey', especially Prozac that has a long half life and takes really long to leave your system, is actually a sudden relapse of symptoms. If you quit taking your meds and your experiencing lots of anxiety, it's probably because you stopped taking the med that was helping with your anxiety!! If your Prozac is causing anxiety, yes, stop taking it and find a doctor who understands that Prozac is shite for so many people!"
majnun99 replied: "If your doctor has prescribed Prozac you should take it as directed. You will probably get worse if you stop taking it.
If you would rather take something else, talk to your doctor about it.
If you have a problem with your doctor, maybe you should try to find another one."
Can I reverse "zap" sensations from abrupt prozac stoppage by restarting medication? I abruptly stopped taking prozac 20mg per day @ two 1/2 months ago. Recently, the zapping sensation is constant and severe. Can I reverse this by starting back on the medication? If not, does anybody know of a way to decrease/lesson the effects of the withdrawal?
krissycontagious replied: "im on prozac to, i dontknow what happens when you come off it, ask your drs
about it"
travisblanto replied: "Doesn't sound like withdrawal if you've been off Prozac for 2 1/2 months. Might be your symptoms coming back?"
tussilagopugs replied: "I stopped suddenly (stupid i know!) five years ago. I was on 60mg a day and its only been the last couple of years the regular spasms (im guessing thats what you mean?) have lessened.
Now it only happens when Im resting/sleeping or im tired.
Hoping it goes away eventually.
Sorry I couldnt be more specific!"
Gard23 replied: "It's a quandry.
Some people reinstate and find it helps, others find that the drug may now make things worse after a time gap has elapsed. Anecdotally (i.e. NOT scientific, but going from individuals' experiences) the 6 week point seems to be a reasonable point, after which it might be advisable to proceed with extra care.
If you wish to reinstate to see if it can help you, rather than wait it out, it might be most sensible to see your doctor, discuss the matter, & be monitored. You don't want to be 'out on a limb' if you have an adverse reaction. I do know of one documented case of an individual in withdrawal (Paxil, I think) who spent a long time suffering & being disbelieved until finally she was allowed to retry the drug by the doctors... a few hours after the first dose (I think, can't find the reference for you), she started to get some relief.
Reinstating at a low dose might be one option, why expose your body to the full 20mg when a lesser dose might help, and if you do experience an adverse reaction then it may be mitigated by the low dose... Prozac is available as a liquid, so taking a smaller dose is easy.
Prozac withdrawal tends to cut in later because of the longer half-life.
To be zapping at this stage isn't uncommon, some people get them for months and months, but usually they lessen with time. Stress, tiredness, exertion all seem to worsen withdrawal, and the body tends to be in hypersensitive mode (light, sound, smell, emotions....) during the withdrawal process, so trying to cut down on these stimuli may help.
Fish oil and good diet may help; B vits can be too stimulating... but always check your own reaction to anything carefully.... some people find they react badly to something that helps others..... again, hypersensitivity seems to be roaming about."
What time is the best to take a regular medication such as prozac? I'm just wondering what time it would be most effective that I take prozac. I take two a day, i've been kind of bad about keeping it at the same time, do you think it works best taking it in the morning, or lunch time? or does it matter...? thank u!
Kristin G replied: "It depends on whether you get side effects. Some people get sleepy after they take it. In that case, you'd probably want to take it in the evening. Otherwise, it doesn't really matter, but you should try to keep on schedule to prevent any withdrawal side-effects from occuring."
lil bit replied: "My doctor prescibed morning"
Can anyone share their good/ bad experiences with the medication prozac with me? I am wondering about this medicine because my doctor said he would highly recommend it to anyone in his own family but i have read so many bad things online under search results that i am now scared t take it. The articles mentioned such things as suicde, adultry, disassociation from family members, road rage, violence, vision problems etc etc, so if anyone can tell me some of their own experiences whether good or bad i would really appreciate it, thank you...
jennifersuem replied: "I have NEVER had ANY of those types of reactions. Either has my 14 yr old daughter.
I have been taking Prozac for MANY YEARS! My daughter just stated taking it.
Not everyone reacts the SAME way to medication. I would consider these effects as rare or seldom happening."
LURCH replied: "Prozac has gotten a bad rap because in the beginning doctors didn't know what some of the side effects could be. I have been on Prozac for over 2 years and it has totally changed and possibly saved my life. The problem is that in some patients Prozac has a reverse reaction of what it is supposed to do. Your doctor should stress that if you start taking the medication and your symptoms get worse stop taking it immediately and contact the doctor. Best of luck."
ALIEN replied: "first of all why do you need it,a healthy diet would give you better results or even a less addictive drug my doctor has me on cymbalta, not as nasty as prozac, i funtion verty well with it"
Ginkgo replied: "The reason for all these things is because it is doing its job-- supressing the symptoms. Does not deal with the cause. Ask doc if FDA only approves of its use for 6 months and no longer. He will say "yes." Ask if he has patients on it for years and he will say "yes." This page has natural alternatives where the only side effect is to make you healthier.

xoxofire replied: "Oh please please please do not get on this drug. My ex boyfriend was on it and turned into a rageaholic psycho. I was on cellexa (in the prozac family)and it numbed me. Ofcourse the doc is going to tell you that because that is how he makes his money. Sorry to say most docs these days are drug pushers and don't care about your well being. There are natural ways to deal with depression like taking 5-HTP- 50 mg twice a day with Tyrosine and vitamin B complex. You can look online for natural antidepressants. If you eat lots of sugar and or don't work out these simple things can make a huge difference. Taking up yoga will do wonders for anxiety and depression
I feel sorry for my ex. It broke us apart. I don't even know who he is anymore. Please do Not Take this drug. And go to a different doc!!!!Try a naturopath doctor..."
mjdp replied: "If you have been prescribed it, take it.
Sure there have been various reports but remember the slightest side effect or even one case has to be reported.
Prozac has been around for years and is safe, There is always a risk of side effects with any medication and Prozac is no exception. However the risk of serious side effects are minimal and if it works to make you seel better then the benefits outweigh the risk"
Dana replied: "I had a VERY bad reaction to it. It sent me into mania and then a mixed episode and I almost killed myself, but I just found out that i'm bipolar, and anti-depressants can do that to BP people. I also know someone who took Prozac for years, and it's what helped him and he was fine. If you ever go on ANY anti-depressant, just be careful and watch your mood carefully, and make sure there are people looking out for you when you first start or change your dose. I can't make a blanket statement "good or bad" -- it depends on the person an what's really wrong, but I would recommend Prozac before I would an MAOI, so..."

Higher dosage on depression medication Prozac? My doctor has upped my daily dose of Prozac from 10mg to 20mg a few days ago. Since then, I have been feeling a bit more tired than usual. Is this normal? Should it subside in a couple days?
Wildcat replied: "You should get past the tiredness. Try to remember if you had it at the start of your treatment. It may take longer to go this time, but that's one of the side effects that usually goes away. Yes, it's very normal."
Sturm replied: "Any change in meds will cause some problems if your bodies been on one dose for awhile. always talk to your doctor about what your going through any changes etc. no matter how insignificant you think they are."
Scott T replied: "When I took the prozac it did make me tierd. Please be carefull with this anti depressant. It is the oldest one in the books but it is also VERY INEFECTIVE for most people. I know that it made mine and anyone I knew deppression much worse. It does tend to pull you more into the hole. My docter switched me to Rameron and Omg its the best one I have ever taken, It does make you gain weight tho and very tiered, so take it at bed time and when you wake up its wonderful! and it only take litterally 3 days to balance everything back to normal. I hope this helps.. good luck"
tooter replied: "Your body will adjust to the side effects."
YA Junkie replied: "One of the first things to note is that the average dosage of Prozac is 20 to 60 mg. Perhaps you are fairly young, and that is why your dosage (evan at 20 mg) is small.
As most answerers said, it is common that an increase in dosage can lead to side effects (including triedness). However, as your body adapts to the new dosage, those side effects can lessen or completely disappear.
I am sorry to say this, but many medications, including psychiatric ones, can lead to various side effects depending on the person. Every body and mind is different, and people can react to meds very differently. I have heard people say that Paxil was a wonder drug for them, while someone else say that Paxil gave them bad side effects.
So feeling more tired is certainly a possible reaction to increasing Prozac. However, it may only be temporary. Choosing the right medication and dosage is sometimes trial and error.
By the way, I hope you are being treated by a psychiatrist, not a regular MD. Psychiatrists have much more experience and knowledge about mood disorders and psych drugs than regular MDs. I wish you the best."

With thinking less, you get more focused. SO BEING LAZY, AND THINKING LESS [ pumping a little less adrenaline when you are taking drugs or thinking less ] IS A GOOD THING.
YOU CAN TAKE DRUGS OR YOU CAN THINK LESS. Choice has always been YOURS. You are the result of writing this question and seeing this answer. You wanted it all.
I a person living, far far away would type this, letter by letter no one could imagine. You've the cure. For me the cure has been to consciously make a habit of thinking less, when the FEAR, AND ALL THOSE THINGS JUST TRY TO DEVOUR YOU.

What is your opinion on giving kids (14 and under) medication such as Prozac, Ritalin, etc? I'm writing a paper for my child psych class on a controversial child psychology issue. My issue is prescribing serious medication to children, such as Prozac. Please give me your point of view on the subject, and also if you know any good sites for more information. Thank you.
(By the way, I'm against the majority of meds prescribed)
Minton quest replied: "I can tell you from personal experience- I was against Ritalin. My son was doing terribly in school, not just grades but his social development because of the behavioural issues. I put him on Ritalin (after 4 years of debate with his doctor and school). Now he gets really good grades and is able to maintain friendships. It has made an amazing difference in him and he is a lot happier. (yes we discuss it and he is involved with every choice we make regarding his meds)"
rileysmurf replied: "I am totally against giving children medications such as ritalin and prozac at any age unless they have serious conditions that cause them to hurt themselves or others. I am the sister of an AD/HD brother, the wife of an AD/HD husband and the mother of an AD/HD 7 year old boy. Both my brother and husband were treated with ritalin. My brother was also treated with valium. While he was on medication he was like a zombie...he was like an empty shell. I can't imagine medicating my child and draining him of his personality."
dances_with_unicorns1955 replied: "My son has ADHD and has taken Ritalin from the time he was 7 years old to the present (age 26). If a child needs medicine - whatever the medication is - then that's what he should take. I don't think medication should be subject to a popularity contest or the whims of the public; it's a question, like so many others, for the patient/parents and a doctor. When the general public has walked in my son's shoes AND has a medical degree - then maybe they're entitled to an opinion, but until then, they need to butt out."
ldsholcomb replied: "Prozac is too readily prescribed. I have several times in my life been prescribed this drug because I said I was depressed. I was , but it was because of circumstances. Not a chemical imbalance."
casingda replied: "Excellent question! (I am an adult who takes Prozac, and, let me tell you, it has made all the difference, because I have organic depression--the kind you have for life.) Now, to get to the issue of children and meds. First of all, I think children are diagnosed at a far higher level with ADD, ADHD, etc than is realistic. My daughter, for example, who is homeschooled, would probably be diagnosed as such if she were in regular school, but I know she is just a very active person. She has no trouble concentrating, learning, reading, watching TV, etc, but by several of the standards other children have been diagnosed with, she would probably be diagnosed as having a "problem". I grew up with a brother who was diagnosed as "hyperactive", which is what is was called way back when, and, believe me, he really was. He was given Ritalin, and, if he hadn't been, he would not have been able to function at anywhere near a "calm" level. And Ritalin is not without its long-term side-effects, so there is a trade-off, but it was all that was available back then. I can tell the difference between an active child who has not been properly disciplined, a child who is bored and just needs more to do to stimulate his active, intelligent mind, and one who is truly hyperactive. For those children, it is important that they be properly diagnosed and treated, monitored carefully when it comes to the medications they are receiving, and it is also important that they not be lumped into a group or stigmatized (this happened to my brother). Perhaps, too, better alternatives can be found, as in meds that deal with the root cause of the hyperactivity, rather than suppressing it. However, if you are asking if I think these meds are being used and abused and overprescribed, my answer is a definitive yes. This is all observational on my part, and is not based on any ive scientific data that I am aware of, but I feel it is how society is dealing with (at times) the lack of parental involvement in children's lives and how it is also dealing with teacher's decreasing ability to administer discipline in the classroom, as well as an increase in overall classroom size. As to the issue of antidepressants being prescribed to kids (14 and under). Now that is a loaded question. I had severe OCD as a kid, the worst being when I was in Jr High School. I have suffered from depression, to varying degrees, for years, too. Since these are both organic in nature, and it is know that certain events can make both worse, I wonder if I had been properly diagnosed if some sort of med(s) might have helped me? Probably not, considering what was available in the past, although I'll never know, or even if they would have considered such a thing. So I guess my answer is this. In younger children, because their brains are still developing, this is not something I would consider to be such a great idea, even in adolescents. The problem is, however, that there are kids out there, like I was, who need help. And the long-term effects on developing brains (since these drugs are, on the whole, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are impossible to predict. Perhaps research is needed that will specifically target treating young children and adolescents who have true psychological difficulties that would benefit from properly prescribed and closely monitored meds that are tailored to them, rather than using adult meds."
The Infamous Vinnie G replied: "Most kids do NOT need to be medicated - but psychiatrists and school districts use those drugs as a quick and cheap way to discipline kids by doping them up.
What kids need is better staffed schools and afterschool programs - but teacher's salaries cost money and narcotics are cheaper.
So that's why they dope the kids up!"
pavano_carl replied: "I think the correlation between the the decreasing amount of time parents spend with their children and the increasing amount of children on medication is something that cannot be ignored.
All these drugs- miraculously under patent and requiring life time pre ions- has to be questioned-"
UT ALII VIVAT replied: "my opinion goes lik this...i feel that giving kids medication or diagnosing them with adhd/add is a cop out for raising your kids. not all kids will be able to sit still and there is a neat thing now called re-directing. many child care facilities use this method to get kids to refocus. if we, as a society, teach kids at a young age thatthey can act how ever they want to and its ok bc they have adhd, then they are going to be crap as adults and think that they can act the same way as they get older. parenting is a hard job and not everyone is cut out for it. people need to think long and hard about it before they have kids rather than haviung kids, not wanting to work at raising them so they give them meds to calm them down."
Is Prozac still the most popular medication against depression? Or progressing medicine has already found out another kind of "happy pill"?
~ 925 ~ replied: "I've been treated for bipolar for the last seven years and I've never taken Prozac so in my case no it's not the most popular."
holly c replied: "Im taking a generic for of Celexa called citalopram. my doctor said people have had a lot of problems with prozac like suicidal thoughts. which i thought that if your on depression medication to cure your sadness why would the same medication make you want to think about killing or hurting yourself??? so far so good on citalopram though, ive been on it for about 2 months and i haven't cried like i used to two or three times a day. but to each their own, we all different medical histories and each medication reacts with our bodies differently so prozac could be perfect for you, but disastrous for me ya know?"
Hawk replied: "There are many antidepressants out there now. Prozac has proven not to work so well. It has too many side effects. I wish there was a happy pill. Then nobody would be unhappy and depressed. But unfortunately there is none. There are better antidepressants that help control depression by balancing the neurotransmitters in the brain. you don't feel that happy, but you don't feel that your world has ended either."
ck replied: "i tried 2 different anti-d's before prozac, and prozac is the most amazing one, ididn't feel drugged up or any weird side effects, it saved my life"
taekotemple replied: "There are a few dozen types of antidepressants. Prozac is just one of many. The only reason people know it so well is that it has been more advertised than most other antidepressants. Different antidepressants work for different people, depending on their specific symptoms and biochemistry. Also, different psychiatrists and other doctors that can prescribe psychiatric medication sometimes prefer to prescribe one medication over the other, so in some ways, it depends on the health care professional whether a medication is "popular" or not.
I have a client on prozac, prescribed by her psychiatrist, and she clarified to me that prozac is one of the depression medications that has the least side effects. That may be what is keeping it popular. However, I think that antidepressants are over prescribed, and most people may just need to get some therapy. Also, many need more sunlight, better sleep, and exercise, which are natural ways to increase serotonin levels. Most antidepressants are made to increase the brain's ability to use serotonin anyway."
Ian replied: "Depression - caused by chemical imbalances of serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine and other important neurotranmitters in the brain which balance emotions is a serious issue. Psychologists state that depression is a unhealthy state which we 'can' work through in order to experience greater levels of happiness. Prozac is still an effective medicine for both depression and anxiety. *Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn PhD along with Psychologists Mark Williams, John Teasdale, and Zindel Segal have authored an Excellent Self-Help book called: "The Mindful Way through Depression: Freeing Yourself from Chronic Unhappiness". Mindfulness, a simple yet powerful way of paying attention to your most difficult emotions and life experiences, can help you break the cycle of chronic unhappiness once and for all, that you may experience greater levels of happiness. In 'The Mindful Way through Depression', it is explained why our usual attempts to "think" our way out of a bad mood or "just snap out of it" leads us deeper into the downward spiral of depression. Through very insightful lessons-drawn from both Mindfulness and Cognitive Therapy - Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn PhD and Psychologists- Mark Williams, John Teasdale, and Zindel Segal demonstrate how to sidestep the negative habits that lead to unhappiness and despair, including self-blame and rumination so you can effectively face life's challenges with much resilience."

can i take cold medication if i took prozac? i took 10mg of prozac for two weeks. i haven't taken a pill for 10 days now. i currently have a wicked head cold....can i take any cold or congestion medications? I've read so many horror stories I don't know what to believe anymore.
samimi [loves rent.] replied: "there shouldnt be any side effects after not taking the pills in 10 days. they should be out of your system by now.
so take your cold medicine and feel better!"
What medication has the same effect as Prozac but works faster? I heard Prozac takes up to 6 weeks to start working. I need something to sedate me and make me emotionally numb immediately. Although I appreciate your opinions, please spare me the pep talk on how therapy is a better solution then drugs. Because I start therapy in two weeks. Until then, I really need something, I'm going through a big crisis right now.
Peter replied: "Xanax is immediate. The psychoactive drugs like Prozac do take a while to work. Xanax is addictive, so be careful."
Lively replied: "Klonopin or alprazolam can help you for immediate anxiety. Klonopin is better because it's non-addictive, but I took alprazolam (xanax) for two weeks after my mom died and it really helped."
Michael Y replied: "I suggest that you consult the doctor again who prescribed you the Prozac pills.
Do not self-prescribe as you would not know the appropriateness of the pills and side-effect."
ChaosSounds replied: "willpower man, ive been there, and i know. there is no pill in the world that works better than telling yourself that you are just going to drive on. motivate yourself. its the only way to truly overcome, despite what any doctor or pschycologist will say."
lisa s replied: "klonopin not addictive?? thats funny . anyways i would probably go with ativan 3 mg a day which equals 6 of the .5 mg pills . my mother had a severe anxiety attack and thats what they put her on . make sure you just use it for a couple of weeks otherwise you could get addicted to it like my mom did. klonopin does work with the ativan if you want extra sedation , make sure if you take these meds that you have someone to drive for you and help you take care of things cause you will be pretty out of it.
dont feel bad for having to medicate everyone needs a little help a some point whether its booze , drugs , or meds .
good luck i hope things improve for you."
ivbnabadgrl replied: "Sometimes we just need someone to talk to about our feelings, We need people who can relate to the situation, someone who has been there. I don't know what your particular crisis is/was but I would bet if you searched it, there would be a message board or group environment that has people dealing with similar issues. Search the Internet, if you feel medication is your only help than you must talk with your doctor. Medications can have adverse affects on some. Your doctor needs to know how you are feeling in order to alter your medication. But again, if you want to talk to someone who won't judge you I am here for you. I have made just about every mistake life has to offer. So I been there, and here, and there again. Also, numbing your emotions will work temporarily, but once you stop the meds, the feelings you had will resurface. Best to deal with it straight on. I became a crack addict trying to "NUMB" myself. Believe me, you don't really want that. You need resolution to your pain, or a way to put it into perspective. Talk with your doctor or someone.
Good Luck"
Which medication is better on depression prozac or effexor XR. I currently taking both and I feel one is more I have heard efferox is a beeter drug and prozac has so many side affects. I don't think I should be taking both.
InTheDark replied: "A doctor would be insane to prescribe both medications! Stop taking the prozac!
You'll mess yourself up taking both, even if they are different meds, you're gonna end up a pile of crap that no doctor can help."
appleeater395 replied: "im taking prozac and so far have no side affects, and your right you shouldnt be taking both, worse things that would happen is a tummy ache or a headach well the pharmacy guy told me that, and so far i have neither."
Randall replied: "These medicines are more powerful than cocaine and will have the same dramatic negative effects over time .... they are no solution. Don't be deceived by them. They are aging you real fast."
Alicia R replied: "no u should not take both just in case one contrasts with the other it might be bad and in my opinion Prozac is better"
MomSezNo replied: "You need to talk with the prescribing doctor about this issue. Be sure you understand why you are taking the two medications. Tell the doctor what side effects you are having.
It's not a good idea to adjust your meds without a doctor's supervision."
Jennifer S replied: "Did your doctor prescribe you both or are you just playing pharmacist? Consult a doctor about this combo if you haven't already. Both of these drugs increase serotonin production in your body and too much serotonin can cause you to go into a coma. Be careful!"
